It's been a while... too long of a while...

I did three of these shirts for the three youngest granddaughters...

There was Halloween with two of the grandchildren being Mermaids
Their youngest sister a Lady Bug...
Their Best Friends came to Trick or Treat with them...

I did do three of these shirts for three special little girls...

There was Thanksgiving . . .
Three youngest on way over to Nana's
Oldest Grandson and youngest granddaughters eating with their great- grandfather and grandfather...
Oldest two granddaughters took youngest three to the lake to feed the fish...

Then there was meeting up with best friend from college days and we roomed our senior year together at Bizarre Bazaar after TOO MANY YEARS...and we actually recognized each other...last time my 31 year old was 2 years old...And there was Christmas...

My cousin's wife is doing well...thank all of you who have contacted me letting me know you are praying for her and donor family/loved ones.

Doctors and nurses are very pleased. Some fluid around a lung. That is common they say. Drain tube and mild diuretic keeping that in control. Weening her off one medication so they can start weening her off respirator. Responding to nurses commands and opens eyes when my cousin/her husband and their daughter speak to her. Heart is working beautifully! So very much to be thankful for and to praise God how he is working in this miracle in our family and this miracle leading to other miracles/healings as well.

A good friend of mine back in school days of years way gone by and growing up in beautiful Mathews County... Who also is the wife of (41 years this July) my dear first cousin after being on transplant list for almost two years got her new heart last night/early this morning.

Wonderful news is this is now beating on it's own in her body. Next 48 hours critical for her and her new heart.

If you pray, please keep her and her family in your thoughts and prayers.

AND also keep in your prayers the family of the donor who gave our family this wonderful gift in the time of their deep loss and time of tremendous grief.

If you are not a prayer...keep them all in your good thoughts.

Bad, Bad, Blogger

My oh My I am a bad blogger...last time I blogged I had just broken my foot! Well...I switched groups and went to the one I have past history with and trust. He told me it was not bad, he saw no need of surgery, the boot was all I needed. Went back month ago and 90% healed...go back end of this month. Apparently takes as long for the last 10% as it does for the first 90% in the healing process.

Memorial Day morning I looked out my kitchen window and saw several deer in my backyard. Grew up in the rural country and never saw a deer except along roadside near woods or victim of an accident with vehicle. Live in the "BIG CITY" and see deer it seems all the time the past year or so. By the time I found camera they were in neighbors back yard behind mine.

Laura is playing T-ball. Hope she follows her mom's footsteps and play baseball with the boys! She and sister Rachel are both riding two wheel bikes learned in a couple hours. Emily is ripping behind them on her trike.
I did polka-dotted initials on t-shirts for the girls their mom bought for Memorial Day and the Fourth of July

After DH had one eye surgery and before the second one (which was today) we and DD and her oldest two took a few days off and headed to Amish Country. Her DH stayed home with their youngest and our pets.

Laura went last year and this was Rachel's first year to go with us. They were both so very good.
We did a LOT of outlet shopping and visited Bird-in-Hand Farmer's Market to stock up on the goodies they sell.
At breakfast every morning at Dienner's ! All you can eat for $4.95 and a large variety breakfast foods and pastries to temp anyone's appetite.

The girls loved the farms lands...
One big treat for them was the Amish Buggy ride. Laura and her mom took it last year and it was on her list of must do for this year. Rachel loved it too. The Amish gentleman let them ride up front with him and even let each of them hold the reins for a while. That was a BIG TREAT for the two girls. He was very informative and answered all questions those in the buggy asked him.
I did get to go in two Amish Owned Fabric places and picked up a few fat-quarters and a panel to add to my stash and a tw0 yard piece of Green Bay Packer's Fleece for DD to make her daddy a blanket. She makes the ones where you use two different colors/prints of fleece, cut fringe around the edges and tie the fringe pieces to join the two layers.

Well, I've missed three good Estate Sales and Mid-Atlantic because of my foot! BUT, I listen to my inner voice and Monday called the orthopedist I have been to for other problems. He was out of town but I see him Friday!!!

Feel like the weight of the world been lifted from my shoulders!!! Don't know what he'll say but I have faith in him. Took my baby girl two him when she was 12 for her foot and 17 for her hand. He patched her up just fine. And I know I can trust him as some years back he sent to out of town to another surgeon who he felt was better than he for this particular surgery. Today I have full use of that hand!

I know he'll fix my foot back to normal or send me to someone who will.

My neighbor across the street has one of these trees...
Wednesday my three little granddaughters and I picked up sticks and twigs from our oak trees and the gumball fruit from the neighbor's sweet gum tree that loves to fall and bounce to our yard. Thursday and Friday they filled basket after basket of the gumballs and dumped them in our trash can.

DD came over early Saturday morning and we walked to an Estate Sale around the corner around us. We got there and there was a very long line so we went back home. Around noon we were on our way to check out the Estate sale and walking down our driveway I slipped on one of two of these
on our driveway.

So I am now sporting one of these lovelies on my left foot as I fractured fifth metatarsal.

My doctor x-rays me Tuesday sent me to ortho doctor today. He's the local university's athletes doctor and suppose to be good. I'm not sure as I want to see the one I've seen before and think the world of... Bottom line is I most likely need surgery since the area where it happens is not know for good circulation needed for bone healing. But we are trying to avoid it as my DH has a surgery next week, then we are going out of town for a long weekend and he'll have surgery again three weeks from the first one. Mine will have to wait until after he's OK. So say a prayer that the bone is healing in two weeks when he does x-rays again and that my DH's two surgeries go well and won't need the third one. If bone not healing then magnetic treatments. If those don't work surgery will be needed. For sure the OS who I've seen before will be doing it.

SO I AM SICK since won't be attending Mid-Atlantic this year as have to stay off the foot for a LONG TIME. I'll be looking for postings from all my friends in blog land who will be attending Mid-Atlantic.

This morning family gathered to celebrate Laura's 5th birthday! With her cake before blowing out her candle. The crown she made at school. The birthday person decorates a crown to wear on their birthday...since hers was today she celebrated it Friday at school.

VALENTINE SHIRTS

I'm still among the living. Keep wanting more snow. Have been teased since the big one Christmas Day and day after but it's been missing us in Jan and so far in February. There some talk of some this week. We'll see.

I have done two of three Valentine shirts for the dearest little granddaughters. Above is picture of two of them DD took for me. Need to do name for Emily and add it to the balloon design for the third one.

The DH is now on a Bison kick. I have put some of those on a few of his shirts.

My camera's flash died right before Christmas. So having to depend on others to take pictures for me. Waiting to get my Sam's Club, Costco and Ebates.com rebates checks as I have decided to spring for a nice camera at either Sam's Club or Costco.

Next project, once I get Emily's Valentine shirt done today, will be Birthday Cupcakes t-shirts for the two February Birthday Girls.

Hope all of you had a Merry and Blessed Christmas! Ours was wonderful...twenty of us gathered here to eat...we had two new ones this year...step-daughter has a new male friend and he and his twenty year old son joined up. First year her x hasn't been here to eat and open gifts with us. BUT he did come with the oldest grandson later that day and while here it started SNOWING!!!! They came back the next day and the oldest grandson and his daddy shoveled our walkway and path down the driveway to the street. Put our trash and recycle dumpsters out to the curb.

SNOW!!! yes a WHITE CHRISTMAS!!!! and by the time it stopped the day after we had over a foot of white fluffy stuff!!!! It was beautiful!!!

Laura on the 27th. She and Rachel thought the snow on the tables and chairs looked like birthday cakes so the had their mom hand over some birthday candles and celebrates with snow cakes.
This on though dated the 27 was the 26th around 10 or so. Legend had a wonderful time romping in the snow. He'll be 11 in February but still loves snow. He would go out and come in and head to another door to go out and come back inside. Had to make sure it was snowing outside all doors.

I had nothing I could think of that I wanted for Christmas so had my DH to give me the Accu Cutter Go I bought a few months ago and never have taken it out of the box as been so busy around here. Hopefully I'll get nerve to try it soon.

I did get one surprise I had read about Amish Cooking cookbook
on A JOYFUL CHAOS blog. She's a former Amish lady who writes about her youth growing up Amish and will tell us why she and her husband left the Amish. I tried and tried to find a copy on line to purchase. . . Well my DD found a slightly used copy and grabbed it for me!!! I was so surprised when I opened that box. And another cookbook I'd been wanting by the Lafayette, Louisiana Junior League. Her mother-in-law gave me a Gooseberry Patch cookbook I'd been wanting...So it was a sewing and cookbook Christmas for me!!!!

But Sunday afternoon my F-I-L was admitted to the ER and into the hospital with Heart Problems. He was released yesterday and hopefully the medications adjustments will help stop the spells he has suffered with the past few weeks with dizziness, weakness and such.

Reading her blog has brought back many memories...her remembering as a tiny child me as a teenager/young adult.

MERCURY GLASS HALLOWEEN

I was visiting Lola the other week to see what she's been up to...that gal is always making the prettiest stuff!!! One talented lady with a needle and thread or sewing machine also with decorating ideas. On her sidebar I clicked on some link that took you to a link of a bunch of ideas for autumn and a bunch of blogs. I as clicking around visiting so many neat folks And I found this one who had made this Faux Mercury Glass. She had done a pumpkin and I had a glass pumpkin sitting in the cabinet like she used. I love old Mercury Glass though don't have any. This lady's blog with the Faux Mercury Glass Pumpkin also took you to tutorials for three different finishes she had come up with for Faux Mercury Glass.
While at Wal-mart last week I got a can of spray paint that was a shiny silver mirror like finish. Later went hunting for the glass pumpkin...found it in the last cabinet where I was looking. Wasn't in the group I was sure it was in. It had been up above the refrigerator for years I am sure. I gave it a quick bath, let it dry a while. One of the finishes I read about you leave it wet inside. Others you dried. I decided to let a few droplets remain and sprayed away the inside of the pumpkin. The tutorial showed the outside wrapped in plastic and taped so not to get any paint on the outside but lazy bones me did not do that step. I sprayed it, set it aside and let it dry a while. The next day I decided I didn't like the places the water drops didn't let the paint adhere so I resprayed the insides. this time you can tell where the droplets were but still has silver there. I like the results. My pumpkin my F-I-L gave me around 30 years ago with candy in it. But I was at Wal-mart this a.m. and they had them in clear glass and also a fall green glass...like the old avocado green glassware of the 60's and 70's. Boy did I just date myself!

The picture doesn't do it justice it does look a lot like Mercury Glass.

ANOTHER SHIRT

While at the Fall Festival "Baby Lucy's" mommy saw the girls in their shirts I made them and wanted on for "Baby Lucy" as she is called by the girls. I have idea those three will be calling her "Baby Lucy" when she is 50! My mother was called "Baby" by her parents, aunt and grandparents...she was in her 70's when her parents and aunt died and still called "Baby".

I think this is as cute on the black if not cuter, as it was on white shirts.

CELEBRATING AUTUMN

Here are the three girls with the shirts I did for them at the Fall Festival yesterday at Newport News City Park after they had their faces painted.

A family tradition we started few years ago...daughter, her husband and three babies get in their car, we get in our car, some years her husband's parents get in their car, his brother and his family gets in their car and we head over to Surry County to College Run Farm to pick pumpkins. This year son-in-law's parents and his brother and his family didn't go because of other commitments but the rest of us went and our oldest grandson rode with us. We picked pumpkins, afterward we had delicious homemade vanilla and pumpkin ice-cream they have for sale there. And shopped in their gift shop.

We go across the JRB---James River Bridge which is 4-1/2 miles long to go Isle of Wight County. Ride past fields of cotton, soy beans, peanuts, corn, etc. to Surry County where more fields of the same growing.

And we start seeing fields of pumpkins and know we are nearing College Run Farm.

HALLOWEEN SHIRTS

My DD saw a shirt she loved for her three girls to wear during the Halloween season. She didn't however like the price tag almost $40 for a shirt for a two, three and four year old. Yep it would have been $120. for three shirts. She asked if I could come up with a Witches Hat Applique in Zebra print, Polka Dots, etc.

I went to Target bought three white t-shirts. Went to Nancy's Calico Patch and bought some zebra print fabric and lightweight fusible. Went to Wal-mart and bought several spools of ribbon.

Drew a witch's hat on the paper backing on the fusible, cut the shape out, ironed it to the front of the t-shirts. Did a black zig-zag around the edges, stitched the ribbon down around where the band would join the hat, made a bow and stitched it down.
And using the "Child's Play" font built into my Bernina 830 I added their names on a slight curve following the brim of the hat.

HALF A BRAIN, JUST HALF A BRAIN IS ALL I WANT...

I would like to have just half a brain. . . just half. . . Today was a day where what little brain I do have was not functioning. . .

Last fall I bought a Bernina 830. LOVE IT! But I was a tad bit slow. . . I took the out of the box class. . . and a few others here and there when my schedule permitted. It's not like this was my first computerized machine. . . I had the Bernina 180, still do. For some reason when I brought the 830 home I could not take it out of the box and set it up. The two boxes which are VERY LARGE were in downstairs bedroom and they made the perfect gift-wrapping center for wrapping Christmas presents with the embroidery unit box sitting on top of the box with the machine in it.

Finally in February I took another class and promised my friends in it (we all have 830s) I was going home, take down my 180 and set up the 830. . . and I did within a few weeks. . .

This past week I went in to purchase the USB stick. . . over the weekend I decided to finally get on the computer and open software to design the monograms. . . saved them to the USB stick. . . . . . check it on the computer designs there. . . today I stick the USB in the 830 and doesn't find the designs. . . what is wrong??? DUMMY HERE saved it like you would on a regular USB and it was therefore saved in ART format. Shouldn't have been. . . should have been saved in EXP??? Think that's right. . . anyway I should have done it as if the computer was hooked up to the machine and sending design to it and instead of clicking on 830 machine click on 830 USB stick so it would change it to the required format needed on the machine. . . So I go back. . .do it correctly after it dawned on dimwit here what was wrong. . . go back to machine. . . low and behold the design is there this time. . . start stitching and the bobbin thread is pulling up. . . Re-thread the bobbin area and again. . . still pulling up. . . remove hoop and start picking out what had been stitched.

After lunch go to my dealer and tell them dumbest of dumb, dumber and dumbest (what my two friends and I call our little threesome group. . . (one of the instructors there calls us her problem children---see we are pitiful I tell ya) . . . the ladies working know it means. . . I have a simple problem but it turns major when comes to me . . . calls one of the Bernina experts . . . Bless her heart. . . shows Dumbest here how to thread the bobbin thread for normal sewing and the additional step for embroidery work. . . so it goes through three slots. . . and how to use the dental mirror to check to make sure it is in all three slots. . . well two of the slots. . . the first one is easy to see. . .

Now what I did after all that ordeal any ordinary person with half a brain could have done with their eyes close . . .

DD brought two cute dresses for her oldest two which she wanted me to do a three letter monogram on the bodice for them to wear to Meet-the-Teacher this Thursday at the pre-school they will be attending three days a week this coming school year.

Some time back I purchased the curly font at ALL ABOUT BLANKS Check them out they have darling things!!! I thought that font would be precious on these two dresses.

And this is a lunch bag which one of them wanted me to put her name on. This font is one built into the machine.

I Machine Embroidried Today

Last month a friend of one of our girls asked if I could put her daughter's name or initial(s) on a few towels and pillowcases she is taking to college this fall. Warned her I had not bonded yet with my new sewing machine as the previous week I did a large "E" on bathing suit for one of the grandbabies which turned out good but then "L'' on her little friends dress for her birthday didn't do as well...off centered. (I knew it was me and not machine...found out the reason from dealer and tried not to do that trick again).

Since the grandbabies are at the beach this week, I thought today would be a good afternoon to warm up to the new 830... Took me a WHILE to figure out what functions did what...and what is so sad is I have a 180 I got back in 2000, which embroiders and I used that baby daily...but took me a while to bond with her too...kept going back to my early 80's 930. Guess, I'm a slow bonder. . . is that a word??? doubt it. . .

Well, the 830 told tested me and jammed gears but I was bound and determine she would not get the upper hand. . . did what machine told me to do, did all the suggestions then tried again and worked fine....I think/know I am not doing the bobbin correctly that sucker is tricky, two ways to thread it one for normal sewing one for embroidery...I just try, say a prayer, hold my breath and hope it is correct. . .

Anyhoo... below is hand-towel and bath-sheet. . .

By the time I was finishing up we were agreeing with each other better...but the pillow case the bobbin wasn't correct as a few of the bobbin threads showed an ency weensy bit. . .

One day this week going to go visit dealer and practice there the two different ways to thread bobbin. . .

Tomorrow. . . going to be spray painting two chairs, three tables, a few milk cans and such. . .

Following day. . . painting porch swing. . . since it is dark and going white wondering how many coats it will take ? ? ? Be using Kiltz first so the dark stain won't bleed through the white paint.

MEMORIAL DAY

Wishing all of you a meaningful Memorial Day! I wish to honor all who gave their all and lost their lives in all wars to keep us free and to honor all who have served in our Armed Forces and survived to return home to their loved ones.

A picture of my Daddy---Garland W. Hudgins when he was home before being sent to Europe during World War II. This was taken in his parents yard. He is holding my oldest first cousin Betty.

Daddy survived D-Day Invasion on Omaha Beach, Battle of the Bulge, and the Invasion of Africa.
While overseas his mother died and it took two weeks before the Red Cross notified him...he was at the Command Headquarters at that time.

Daddy survived the war and came home to marry my mother and raise two daughters. But loss his life way to early at the age of 63 to cancer.

BAD WEEKEND

Since Thursday life has turned upside down around these parts of the woods. I had bronchitis earlier and getting over it. Husband had signs of it and he would not go to doctor. Probably just as well now as Thursday he went for his normal blood work and his Dr. not there and the person seeing his patients doesn't do it but thinks he has pneumonia and sends him to ER. Where they start IV's going right then upon arrival with two antibiotics plus fluids as he's dehydrated. Do chest x-ray, come in and said he had to be admitted so the antibiotics could be continued. Also running a TON of Blood Work for bacterial infections among other things.

Baby Girl rushes from work and they sent her straight back. She talks him into being admitted. This man is 68 and was born in hospital and when 4 had tonsils out otherwise never a patient in one. Waiting for room to be made ready and next thing we know they are whisking him to ICU he is in Acute Renal Failure. He numbers were eight and suppose to be one or less.

Good news he did not have pneumonia and actually his lungs were amazingly clear. All the scans and numerous other tests show his heart is fine. His kidneys are normal in size, look great otherwise. This failure was caused by one Rx turning against his kidneys attacking them then another one he takes to protect his kidneys from diabetes turned against him causing further failure.

His numbers started coming down, his blood pressure which was dangerously low started going back up and his accelerated heart rate returned to normal by the next day so moved him to a private room. Where his reputation became the worse patient anyone had ever seen in their lives. Not a good reputation to have when those people check your IV's give you shots, tend to your catheter for 24 urine collection.

Saturday his numbers had dropped more but still high and they admitted two people for kidney failure whose were lower than his the day before. But since we are five minutes from hospital, and he so unhappy and stressed out, they agreed to let him come home and go back to Dr. Monday for blood work. To make sure the magnesium they gave him by the bagfuls for three days is holding and the bags of iron has his anemia which we had no clue about either are back to normal and especially his Creatinine levels are heading closer to normal levels. So he can remain home and off of dialysis. That they will find a medication he can take that won't mess his kidneys up. And they can get him back on his diabetes medicine as that and a dye used in one of the scans if mix in the blood/body that can do kidney failure as well.

LONG OVERDUE

I've been told I am long overdue for blogging. And I am. I promise to blog again soon. So far behind I'm not sure where I'll start. But I promise I shall soon . . . must get over whatever is going on in my lungs. . .told bronchitis but the medications hasn't helped that much and have finished the Z-pack--still taking the others.

My goal is to put an "E" on the cutest little swimsuit for the cutest little 19 month old with my new machine. Took my old one in for a good going over and to have two issues fixed...low bobbin thread alert and needle threader. Both had to be replaced on old one. It is now good for me to take to class or baby daughter to take over it when she feels she's ready to upgrade machines.

To get an idea how sick I've been, I was in the quilt shop one morning to order an embroidery stick. That afternoon Dr. Al called to tell me this issues, costs, etc., next day someone called and said it was ready to be picked up. Took me OVER two weeks to get there to pick it up. NOW, that was a first I doubt seriously that store open for 23 years at various locations and I've never been a week without dropping by to peek around to see what's new, etc.

When I went to get refills for Rx's I stopped in, got machine and the new stick.

Garden Song embroidery designs are by Nancy Halvorsen. Really nice designs in it. And while I was googling around looking for pictures of it found out there is a line of fabric by her in the Garden Song theme which looks NICE too!

And good news is M-I-L who was taken ill before we went to PA and admitted to hospital, we cut trip short when we learned about her and came home to find her being moved to nursing facility for therapy. This week family told she should be able to go home in two weeks. We are elated never thought she'd be able to go home again the first few weeks at the facility. However, with the bout I've been dealing with and also DH dealing with now as well I can see how someone in their 90's could get that weak that quick.

STILL AMONG THE LIVING...

I am still among the living...or at least I think I am.

Go to doctor for routine checkup, blood work off, puts me on antibiotic, that makes me feel rotten, Vitamin D deficiency, get Rx for that, think I see improvement but not like I had hoped to feel by now.

I have been trying to get lace and pictures together to send Laurie for the quilt I won that she is going to make. Seems I don't get far with it and something comes up. Run out of Photo Paper. Buy Photo Paper. Run out of ink. Buy ink. After finding pictures I want in it . . . change my mind. Find pictures I like but other people them beside that particular person I want a single picture. Need to see if I can crop them and get them like I want.

Went to Lancaster, PA. Week of the Quilt Festival. Wanted to go to it SO BAD. Had plans to get by the Quilt Festival in the back of my head... Didn't. Did get some outlet shopping done. Well a lot of outlet shopping done. Did get to two fabric shops I've been wanting to visit. Bought WAY TOO MUCH FABRIC...will post later pics of that when I get around to taking pic of it.

DD and DGD went with us. DGD is now four and she was such a good shopper and such a good traveler during the six hour drive each way. She loved the "Horses with Wheels". . . translation . . . Amish Buggies. She and her mom got to take a tour on the back roads in one.

Our trip was cut short as DD called me DM-I-L in hospital. First thought heart as chest and back pains but heart tests great, x-rays showed double pneumonia. So we left next morning to return home. She has now been moved to nursing home and we are in hopes PT will help her get strength back so she can return to her home and DF-I-L will be able to take care of her. . . both in 90's and refuse to leave their home. Strange thing is she has not coughed the first time except when doctor asks her to cough...he never seen pneumonia much less double pneumonia without a cough. Still on oxygen and is responding to medication.

MID-ATLANTIC QUILT FESTIVAL 2010

Yesterday DD and I headed out to Hampton to attend the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival being held this weekend at the Hampton Convention Center. We only had an hour or two but made good use of our short time there.

This quilt, I am so sorry I do not have a full picture of it...the top is cut off as is part of the lower border... but it was SO AWESOME...I regret I did not take now the lady's name who made this memorial quilt in honor of her son's service in the US Army. He gave it all to keep our freedom. The center of it is actually his camouflage jacket.

I am more of the traditional quilter I love and do Log Cabins, Dresden Plate, Grandmother's Fan, Double Wedding Ring, etc. But, I also love the pictorial quilts though I have not bit the bullet to try on yet. At quilt shows they seem to be the ones I take pictures of...

I thought this was neat winter/spring scene.

I cut part of this off when I took it....I'm not sure if this was done by the lady who has done some of rooms in the past where you swore you were peaking through the door or window into someones house (living room, bedroom, kitchen)...and the colors in this one were more muted if she did this one...but right for this scene.
I am a nut about Christmas and this one needless to say I thought was wonderful...

I admire album quilts and would love to get up nerve to do one...this was a beautyThis one took my eye too...such precision...

Love this one...brought back memories of my childhood visiting my great-grandmother who raised chickens and sold their eggs to some family, friends local rural general store for extra "egg money" money.
Though I don't consider yo-yo quilts as being a quilt since no batting and now quilting...but I have made a yo-yo quilt and it takes as much time....I loved this one and now itching to take mine apart and rearrange it.
I am daffodil lover having grown up in a major daffodil growing area. I just loved it!!!
And being a huge baseball fan, having a daughter who was a local baseball all-star in Little League, Junior League, Senior League, AAU, JV and Varsity until she switched to softball in her Junior year in high school and a grand son who also was an all-star Little League, AAU and Junior League---he was also on the Red Sox teams in those leagues. Boston Red Sox is also his favorite team. I was naturally drawn to this one...
Those who know me I am a huge dog lover and also cat lover...dog and cat quilts always call out my name...

Rachel turned three this week and we all gathered to celebrate.

There were plenty of presents but one of the best was fingernail polish in a gift bag full of girlie things. Year older sister Laura helps opens the separate bag they were in.

SOME ITEMS WHICH RECENTLY FOUND NEW HOME WITH ME

I recently acquired some new to me items which I brought home with me...

A couple weekends ago there was an estate sale a block or so from our house. DD and I went over to take a look on the second day when things were discounted 30%, third day 50%. Third day was snowed out and was held this past Saturday but I didn't get over to see what was left. I did find for 30% off of $25. a nice heavy pewter coffee pot...when checking out I learned there was a creamer that went with it...no sugar dish...but that's ok I have another pewter creamers and sugar bowls just no coffee or tea pots...

Then last Tuesday my 92 year old d-m-i-l had some things for me to take home with me...she is busy cleaning out things so there won't be so much for me to have to do "when her time comes"...two sets of placemats I have given her over the years...one set is blue toile and the other blue with yellow floral and I am glad to have those as I am huge fan of toile and loved them when I bought them for her years back.

She also had this wonderful vintage cross-stitched tablecloth

and these pillowslips with this fabulous trim...the pillowslips have seen better days so I plan to remove the trim and put it on a new pair of pillowslips.

Jake will turn Sixteen on the 16th! We gathered Sunday, Valentine's Day to celebrate!

Jake had marinated and grilled pork loins, his mom made stringbeans, corn, mashed potatoes, gravy, etc. I took rolls.

After eating he opened presents with his cousins gathered around...

There were gift cards, money, clothes, key chain for his truck keys, etc.

I love snow! I even have snow dishes. (I have a weakness when it comes to dishes) The past few years have been just about snowless (did I just make a new word?) around these parts and I haven't brought them out. But with the forecast favorable I decided it was time.

Finally Snow came to us in the form of more than a dusting or worse yet flurries. On Saturday, January 30 we were awaken to the sound of snow falling. A friend told me it was sent to me by my Momma, who left us two years ago on January 30th, knowing it would be a bittersweet day for me a real snow would cheer me up.

The two kitties stuck their noses out and looked at me as to say I was CRAZED if I thought they would go out in that cold white stuff and hightailed it back inside to fill their tummies and eat.

But the dog and granddog were overjoyed as was I.

Emily still isn't sure about snow but she at least wasn't crying while out in it today.
Today the sun is out shining bright and even though it is below freezing it is melting. So the grand-babies and their cousins got busy this morning with sliding down the hill in the grand-babie's back yard.

Last Sunday, January 24th, S-I-L David turned 31. We gathered with his side of the family to celebrate with a delicious spaghetti dinner.

CATCHING UP

Can't believe it has been so long since I posted. Started several times and something came up and didn't finish.

On the 19th of December, Elizabeth's 9th birthday, we had SNOW not much but it it made things look like Christmas.
Sadness struck our family on the 21st of December. Some of you may recall last year our Daisy was ill. Doctor was afraid of lymphoma and she had early stages of kidney disease. But she perked up and was back to her usual self for almost a year. And it was decided she didn't have lymphoma. Then all of a sudden she started acting strange. I took her in and she was full of lymphoma tumors and nothing to do but send her to heaven for healing there. Picked up her ashes after Christmas. This was the same veterinarian who had to send our precious Beau (Black Lab) to heaven on the 23rd of December nine years ago and had not forgotten.

But, Christmas was wonderful with 18 from ages 1 to 92 gathered at our house to celebrate. Things were hopping with seven grandchildren from age 1 to almost 16.

Elizabeth turned 9 on the 19th but her mom was sick (she has an outer ear infection and still fighting it) so we all celebrated a few days after Christmas.

GETTING READY FOR CHRISTMAS

I've been a bad blogger. But I have visited your blogs when time permitted. It's been busy. Thanksgiving Day it appears this was the only picture taken with my camera. As you can see Laura found lipstick. She was so proud of how pretty she looked. That was until she saw a picture her mother took of her and she got upset and said she looked like a monster! This picture her lipstick is toned down from what it was in the picture her mother took. Here are three of the seven grandchildren on my porch swing after we had all stuffed ourselves.

Tradition has it that we go buy our Christmas Tree Friday of Thanksgiving Weekend. I put the lights on it this year as I did few years as DH isn't able to do that any longer. This year the three

.and two year old granddaughters did the decorating.

The finished tree just as they did it. I did put a few on at the very top. Each day they move a few around but I haven't touched it. You may say there are clusters and bare spots but Nana says it is beautiful just as they did it!!

I did do a tad bit of sewing. I needed something else for MIL. She had bought a couple tablecloth panels this summer and hemmed them. But wanted and couldn't find a blue and white one. This one I bought last February at Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival from French Connection. I had not gotten around to hemming it. So decided I'd roll hem this one and give it to her. I'll get me another one there this year or order one on-line from them. I did a yellow and blue one for myself a few years ago and they wash and dry so wonderful. Do not fade. This panel could be done either rectangular or round.
And I've done some baking. The two year old
and three year old granddaughters have been helping
Now I must get back to my wrapping and put on a double batch of fudge...

THANKSGIVING

Have started getting ready for Thanksgiving. This morning a friend of DH's gave him a mess of collards early this morning. By six a.m. I was washing them. I pull them from the big center stem, bunching the leaf up tearing it and dropping it into five gallon stainless steel pot my family shipped oysters in back in the 50's & 60's. In the pot is a ham hock. Not just any ham hock but one from Darden's Country Store over Smithfield way. It's the old Virginia style of curing hams that the Smithfield area is famous world wide. I add a few seasonings and let them simmer and simmer and simmer. . .

We used to always get the Old Genuine Smithfield Hams and I'd soak and cook those babies. But, ten or fifteen years ago or so another friend who worked with DH told him of their cousin who cures hams and his wife cooks them, slices, and packages them for a reasonable fee. These hams are cured using their family recipe. So, we decided to try one and since then I have not cooked another ham but get them from the Darden's.

Now, my family would disown me if I did not have turkey and ham both for Thanksgiving and Christmas. We also get hams from them for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, special events such as christenings and baptisms, showers for a new baby, etc. Sometimes in the summer we get a hankering and get one for the Fourth or Labor Day.

Today, we packed the SUV with four of the seven grandkids the oldest is almost 16 then the youngest three of the seven and went to get our Thanksgiving ham. On the trip back home we sample the ham, have a Moon Pie, cold Coke from a glass bottle, some chips of some sort, peanut candy, etc. Another must have from there are chunks of cheese they cut from a big round of cheese. Tomorrow I'll be cooking the turkey breasts. . . there will be four of them. . .our family likes white meat so I stopped doing the whole turkey as I was only one who ate dark meat after my grandparents and mother died. There will be green beans seasoned with ham, mashed potatoes, sweet potato pudding with marshmallows, corn pudding, stuffing, homemade yeast rolls, gravy, cranberries, etc. . .

I brought my new baby home today. I adopted her earlier this week. Today I went to meet her, see what she could do. She's in the back of my car right now. PIECEMAKERS GUILD QUILTS

Each year our city has a Fall Festival at the City Park. Our town has several city parks but this one is the largest. In fact, it is the largest city park east of the Mississippi River. I assume it still holds that status.

There is a large area of food vendors. A large area of Heritage Crafts. Three or four stage areas of shows from music, puppet shows, Indian dance, square dancing, clogging, etc. An area for children to do crafts. A juried craft area-these crafters also sell their items, a market place craft area, petting zoo, and so forth.

Various guilds also set up displays of works from their members. One such booth is the Piecemakers Quilt Guild. I am not a member but a huge fan of their work. They also do Quilts of Valor and each year have squares made where you can write a message and sign it if you desire which will go into one of these quilts. It's always the first thing I head for when I arrive and again when I leave. I should have taken a picture of some of them they had there but didn't realize I hadn't until I got home and downloaded my pictures.

I have a thing for bee hives. I collect honey containers which look like beehives. This quilt has bees flying about and they are flying away with a quilt.
This picture does not do justice to the dragonflies. Their wings were so realistic.

These snowmen were so cute! It was warm and these help cool me down.
I've been wanting to do this pattern. This one was so pretty the colors are perfect for both Fall and Christmas.

Today we celebrated Justin's 13th birthday. He always reads his cards.Money and I-Tunes gift cards were big hits.

Justin blew out all his candles.

This week was also Becky's birthday and she opened a reversible blanket Robyn made for her.

Mercy---It's Been Almost A Month!!!

Can't get over it's almost been a month since I last blogged. I've been visiting your blogs just haven't added to mine...

Today we celebrated Emily's first birthday which is later this week. First her mommy had prepared a great lunch for family and some of their friends. Then it was time for Emily to have her private cake. Chocolate all the way through. At first she wasn't sure what she was suppose to do...but her two big sisters ages 2 and 3 stuck their finger into in and up for her to lick the icing off...then she dug in and as you can see she thought it was delicious! She ate the entire little cake! That was after she had barbecue, macaroni and cheese, meatballs, baked beans, apple slices, chips, etc.

After the cake her mommy gave her a quick bath and put clean clothes on for her to open her presents. She loved this little pink wagon with blocks inside it her other Grandmommy gave her.
I've gotten back to working on her Christening Gown...this weekend I did the sleeves minus inserting them into the dress...Here's a picture of the wrist area minus the ribbon in the beading.

Her mommy wanted a smocked bodice similar to what I did for her sister Rachel and her cousin Victoria...Not wanting to make a third dress just alike and since I couldn't find pretty wide eyelet bordered batiste I went to Martha Pullen's Grandmother's Hope Chest Book and using her Campbell's favorite gown pattern similar to the one from the that book I did for her sister Laura...anyway instead of the lace shaping in the bodice I smocked a piece with pearls and cut the bodice from it. I did do the lace at the neck....and the skirt is by the book. I showed the skirt panels some months back...
Tomorrow afternoon my plan is to insert the sleeves, sew up the side seams. And HOPEFULLY make the slip....or at least get it all cut out and started.

This week I started decorating outside for fall. This wheelbarrow my DH and I just rebuilt...the only thing original on it are the legs. It was a brick mason's wheelbarrow that was rotting away after many years of service in our yard holding pots of mums and loads of pumpkins in the fall, other plants during the spring and summer. He bought replacement handles, pressure treated wood and designed on similar to one we bought years ago at a festival. I ordered a metal wheel for the front as the original rubber one had been replaced and it too had dry rotted hence it was not holding air.
By the garage we do a fall display...the scarecrows I did 17 and 18 years ago.

Next week I plan to get out my decorations for inside the house and let the grandbabies help put them up. Next thing will be to put the witches up flying into the trees and porch column. And swinging from the facial boards around the porch.

A week or so ago a package arrived in the mail for me from Lola of . . .And Sew On . . .

In it I found this beautiful drawstring voile bag seen here . . .with it was this beautiful Mary E. card with sweet note...

Inside what to my amazement did I find but these wonderful pot holders she made for me. On her blog she has directions for making them . . . and you should as they are wonderful!!! I have them on top of my basket of potholders. They are perfect as I LOVE yellow/blue/green with a French Country look. . .

And this banner!!! I just love patriotic decorating from just before Memorial Day through Labor Day. . . this will be up year round! ! ! Right now I have it hanging by my back door from kitchen to backyard.
And this wonderful hand towel that looks like a dress. It matches the potholder and it's beautiful. I have it next to my sink.
Thanks so much Lola!!! I just LOVE all of the items and are enjoying them!!! She is so talented with her needle and thread!!!

Wow Long Time No Posting

Can't get over how long it's been since I last posted. Quick Catch Up---
Baby girl turned 29 on the 17th! We celebrated on the 19th with family meal here.

On Sat. the 18th we went to Surry to the Pork, Pine & Peanut Festival. Not sure if I got the order of the names correct. It has been a favorite show of ours for years. Held on Chippokes Plantation on the James River. Usually hotter than blazes but this year the weather was wonderful and in the shade with a breeze almost chilly. HOWEVER, huge disappointment this year. The craft vendors were way down and of course the ones we loved NOT there. And the biggest disappointment was FOOD. Always great. BUT this year the family we always bought ham sandwiches...REAL SMITHFIELD HAM...and the most wonderful Apple Jacks and Sweet Potato Jacks WERE NOT THERE!!! And a Hunt Club who did curly pig-tail fries they cut there from fresh potatoes were NOT THERE...they had good hot dogs and other foods too. I kept asking around the food vendors if they had applejacks or sweet potato jacks and was finally directed to the only booth there selling them. WELL let me TELL you they were AWFUL The crust/pastry part was thick, heavy and bread like NOT the FLUFFY pie crust like that local family always made. That booth did have Real Smithfield Ham sandwiches so all was not a bust.

Baby girl and her three baby girls went with us and the 3 and 2 year old had a blast. The 10 mo old enjoyed it too. A great petting zoo set up and the blow up jumping things were a hit with them. I found two booths one had hair bow/clips and one had large bead bracelets and the two oldest little ones picked out a few they had to have which Nana bought.

Normally I buy a lot of gifts there and stuff for myself but not this year. Only a new welcome slate with flip-flops painted on it to go in my sign by the light pole which I change out seasonally and when the mood strikes me. Much easier on my wallet this year for sure. But a HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT FOR SURE! At this rate I don't see it being around much longer. Normally huge crowds and this year way down. Used to be $5 a car now $5 a person over 10. And have idea what they charge vendors have gone up too...going to ask my childhood friend who displays her paintings there and wasn't there this year...Afraid those running it are pricing it out of existence.

Last week we and oldest grandson (15-1/2 years old) took a QUICK trip down to OBX ---we ran around from Duck to Manteo. We had a good time. ATE too much GOOD food. Got some shopping in.
OBX for those not familiar with this area on the East Coast is the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Been taking in the final games of the season of the Coastal League Baseball team the Peninsula Pilots! This is last week of the home games held here at the historic War Memorial Stadium. This season has flown by way too fast.

And the bummer is our telephone has been out now for over 10 that's right ten days. Out a day before I got to neighbors to call. Was told be here in ten days which by the way is today--Tuesday, July 28th of July. HOWEVER, last Thursday a Tech showed up and said problem not in house as I already knew as no service at the box on the outside of the house either. He went to the junction box a few blocks away, did something there but he not from this area so didn't have key to get into another box to check something else he felt was wrong. Came back here to make sure my phone and DSL working. Now my DSL has worked most of the time during this except at nights it acts up. Everything was working. That is for two hours it worked. Then goes out again. Get call from them the next morning automated one and I do what it says to get an agent that the problem still exists. Back on list for today. Two calls from daughter's house got in but most just rings and rings on her end but not here in house. Got three automated calls from the telephone company and two telemarketers got through. After a call gets through it works from 10 minutes to two hours and goes dead. Sunday a tech shows up and runs tests and says problem either in lines coming down street and to house or a card in box at the junction box a few blocks away. He goes to switch out card if bad and if not bad will be back. To my knowledge never came back. Sunday night get call phone is fixed a card replaced but that time the phone was dead. I call from daughters three times that night...told problem was in my house to unplug all wires from all jacks and all electrical plugs where phones and or answering machines are plugged in as well as all computers and modems. Wait five minutes and test the box outside. It was dead. Call back...this brain child of someone tells me she just ran a test and it is showing up my Direct TV is causing the problem I asked her how was that she said the satellite wiring into the house. I asked how could that be as I don't have Direct TV or any satellite TV service. Then it was my modem. How can that be it's unplugged still. My cellular phone charger is causing it. Don't have a cellular phone much less a charger for it. My cordless phone that doesn't connect with a jack just to electricity causing it. Don't have one of those either "sweetcakes". AND the box OUTSIDE is DEAD. Service isn't getting into the box outside the house. Well, she'll have TECH come out FRIDAY.....Did you see the steam coming out of the top of my head??? I told her I had been down for Tuesday for over a week now and I wanted Tuesday back they had been here twice and still not fixed the problem. Well I apologize that you have been out of service and a credit as been issued to your account. I told her well that is all find and dandy but I was sorry but she and heaven only knows how many other people by now at least a dozen people have apologized but that still didn't fix the problem with my phone service. And here I sit with still no phone service.

I was told my DSL isn't as sensitive and enough is getting through to run it but not give dial tone for phone service.

GUESS who is about to get a NEW phone service provider if something isn't done quick!

It was Christmas in July today when the box from Tonya of Toyna's Sewing Room arrived for me! In case you didn't know I WON her fabulous Giveaway. Click on her name or blog name above and go visit her!!!

There were two sets of templates in various sizes of stars and hearts! A spool of metallic gold ribbon that is to die for! Three pieces of cross-stitch fabric including the small grid one that I have not been able to find in a LONG time! Since Piece Goods closed around here years ago. A package of white vintage ric-rac...Why I say Vintage it had a price on it for 50 cents and it's COTTON!!! A pair of battery scissors! Can't wait to take those babies for a spin around the cutting mat!!!

There was this darling picture frame with flowers on the top edge and at the bottom of the frame it reads if Friends were Flowers I'd pick you! The flowers show up here but the phrase along the bottom the flash faded it out. Here's a closer look as it's sort of covered up in the above picture.

There were 14 yes fourteen fat quarters of gorgeous fabrics!! Just take a look and drool! Here's a closer look!
She also had the cutest card in there with elephant jokes on the front and the answers inside and a really nice note!

HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY !

Fourth of July has been had various traditions throughout my life. As a small child it meant going out on my grandfather's boat during the day and then my Dad's side of the family cookouts on New Point Beach that evening . One year at the beach on the Fourth I stepped on hot coals covered with sand there and burnt the bottom of my foot when I was around 4 or 5. Did not tell anyone, went down to the water's edge and soaked it in the bay. Kept it from hurting. But when we left boy did it hurt. Saw the doctor who prescribed an ointment and the remainder of the summer meant it was bandaged and then had to wear a sock over it to protect it.

Years later after my granddaddy sold his boat the morning was spent helping Daddy trim the shrubbery and azaleas. And helping getting ready for the family cookout around noon at my grandparents house who lived next door. A cousin always sent my granddaddy a pound cake on the Fourth....her grandmother had always made one for his father/her brother as his birthday was the on the Fourth. After his death she continued making it sending it to my grandfather. She also did it for Christmas. I have her recipe and always make it at Christmas and sometimes for the Fourth. Relatives and distant cousins who were from near and far were in attendance. Always a huge crowd. Daddy cooked on the grill. We ate under the shade of the huge elm tree. Evenings meant a family picnic at the oldest of Daddy's brothers house with his side of the family.

After I was married the Fourth was a cookout at our house for both sides of our families. When DD Robyn started playing baseball and each year made All-Stars and played in the Little League's District 7 Tournament which was always going on that week and we spent the Fourth at the baseball fields watching her play. The year she graduated from high school she was in an national ASA fast pitch softball tournament out in Boulder, CO. Her team didn't have a game on the Fourth so we all went up into the Rockies and the team had a snowball fight. That night we all went to the fireworks at CU. They were the most awesome fireworks I have ever seen. Since then none have compared.

When oldest grandson played baseball and All-Stars again it meant we were at the baseball field watching the District 7 All-Star Tournament. This year was the first time in years we didn't spend the Fourth on a baseball field. We had the family over on the evening of the Third for a cookout. On the actual Fourth DH and I rode over to Gloucester. He had seen ads for a new Tractor Supply Store over there and wanted to go...got there and it didn't look anywhere near to being open for business...just the sign 'opening soon--Tractor Supply". So we hit the Wal-mart over there and the Ollie's, too. Didn't get anything. Then stopped by the Stage Coach. It's a flea market type place with some antique/junique shops. It used to be awesome. Heard it had gone downhill. And over all we were disappointed on this trip. It had been several years since we had stopped by there. There was a shop I used to love and always bought from her. She sold it to another lady who operates it under the same name. It wasn't open which was a big disappointment as I always found a treasure or two in that shop. There were a bunch of tables set up under some tents. They had tables of stuff for $1. an item or 6 for $5. I found this bowl--Anchor Hocking Sandwich pattern. And could not pass it up for a dollar. I have several pieces of it I have bought at flea markets, shops, inherited from my mother, grandmother and great-aunt. It's small about six or so inches across.
Then on another table I found two pieces of Shawnee Corn Pottery. There was the small teapot for $5. Which had to come home with me. I've collected Shawnee Corn off and on for eons. Off when I can't find any at a decent price. I don't have a lot of it. But love it. I have one shelf in a china cabinet devoted to it. I didn't have either of the teapot sizes. They also had the cookie jar. The lady said it was $8 and it was going home with me but the man said no it's $30. So I left it there. I have one that was my Mom's which my Grandmother brought her back from a trip one year. If I was missing it I most likely would have bought it at $30 or ask if he could do any better.

Some of the neighbors set off some fireworks last night and they were very pretty for not being professional fireworks....some were rather professional looking. My grand-baby-daughters were either loving them or not too sure about the noise...but today were enthused about seeing them last night. That was fun watching them and the only traditional thing about yesterday.

This isn't a very good picture of it...even my pale wicker yellow wall is showing up 'builder beige' in this picture...the cup has swirls going up and curving from the bottom of the cup with delicate blue flowers on both the cup and saucer. The saucer edge is scalloped. This teacup and saucer are very thin. Marked Limoges and France. Another one that had been in my great-aunt's collection. The cup is fairly large in diameter. The sides of the teacup go straight up.

A green thumb I do NOT possess! However, my mother-in-law, God Bless her heart, is determine I have flowering blooms. And she is always giving me some plants from her gardens. Even draws layouts where I need to plant them. Now my backyard is nothing but shade. Huge ancient oak trees and some extremely tall pine trees across the back property line. Around the property line are azaleas. Most were planted by the original owner back in the early sixties. Some have died and I have replaced them over the years. But she feels I need flowers. I like flowers it's just I have too much shade! I've planted some in the front yard around the porch. Front yard is also shady. Some on the side of the house. Some around the sides of the backyard. But rarely do any bloom. Rarely do any survive. Rabbits feast on what do come up. I start out with beautiful Hostas each year and the neighborhood rabbits devoured them.

Now I have daffodils various types and they do great in March and April.

Last year my mother-in-law gave me a huge pot of various colors of coleus which she had grown from seed. They froze to death over the winter one night when it got cold and I didn't bring them in. This year I bought a large watermelon coleus plant from the local farmer's market and planted in in her pot. Several pieces have been broken off by me in the repotting process which I've been rooting in my kitchen window to plant somewhere in the backyard.

I have a lace-cap hydrangea my mother-in-law gave me years and years ago. It was tiny little thing in a small pot. It didn't do much the first several years and then took off. It's now over four feet tall maybe five feet tall and rather wide. It used to bloom the same color blooms. This year it has had a variety of colors at the same time.

Can anyone tell me what the above plant is? My mother-in-law gave it to me and she has no idea the name. She has had it in her flower garden for over thirty years since I've been in the family. The picture is sideways. It looks like a dainty Foxglove. Not Foxglove. I have those in my backyard.

My friend gave me this above hanging basket....called Blue Wonder. Never heard of it until she gave it to me for my birthday. A mass of blue blooms.
Some more plants my mother-in-law gave me.
For years as you go into my backyard around the back corner of the garage by my neighbor's fence Impatiens have been coming up volunteer for years and years. I used to have hanging baskets of them several places in the backyard. This year o far they have been slow coming up...just starting I thing to come back. So several weeks ago when no sign of them I bought this plant hoping it would take off and fill in the area.

I found this cup and saucer in a tiny little shop that I rarely catch open. A lady who does estate sales owns it and opens it when she isn't busy with her main job. My mother and I stopped by it one day. She spotted it. I didn't get it that day as I saw a piece of sterling silver I HAD to HAVE that day. I went back a few weeks later and purchased this cup. It has heather painted on it, gold trim, the bow is a Campbell Tartan Plaid and Campbell Coat of Arms. I bought it to give my husband's aunt. But, I was BAD and kept it for myself. She was a Campbell, but I'm married to one...at least that was my selfish reasoning at the time.

CHRISTENING GOWN---EMILY

This weekend I worked some on Emily's Christening Gown. Previously I had made the puffing and shaped and joined the puffing and lace insertion with silk ribbon woven through it together. This weekend I attached the shaped puffing and lace sections to the four godets.

And attached the godets to the side of the middle front and middle back gores. Below are what the side gores look like.
Then I added the side gores. I didn't take a picture of the five sections (middle gore with godet attached to it and then the side gores attached together) which make up the front and the back halves of the skirt. Will have to do that and add it tomorrow. Previously posting I showed the middle front and middle back gores. Tomorrow I need to trim the fabric from behind the lace between the gores and godets. And hope to join the front and back sections together. If I'm lucky I'll get the pattern out and draw off the bodice on pattern fabric and see if I can get this skirt to fit the bodice from another pattern. If not I'll make the bodice that goes with this pattern.

TEACUP TUESDAY

Can't believe it is already Teacup Tuesday! Where did the week go??? This cup is one I inherited from my great-aunt's collection. It's a small cup...larger than demitasse. It's white with a turquoise design and pretty floral bouquet. There's a floral bouquet inside the cup and in the center of the saucer as well.
And on the self where it lives in my kitchen with three others from her collection.
She was a very proper lady married to a true Southern Gentleman. Every morning he would go make a pot of coffee and serve her in bed. There they would have their coffee, listen to the news and read the newspaper before breakfast. This was also done when they traveled and visited friends and family. He would also do this luxury treat to the ladies visiting them and those they visited. They each had a special cup for their home in Virginia and one for their winter home in Florida. Also special ones they carried with them when they traveled.

MORNING AT THE PARK

I keep my baby girl's three baby girls when she and her hubby are at work. Some days Papa and I take them to one of the parks in the area to work off some energy on the playground. Last week we went to one which is all woods except for the three baseball fields there. Baby girl/their Mommy and the oldest grandson both have played baseball there during the sanction Little League all-star baseball season and other summer tournaments. They are use to going to see their older cousin play in tournaments there and the three year old always asks if we're going to baseball game when we go here.

I got a new camera that's thin and fits into pocket and easy to take along. I do not get along well with cameras...family always say takes me five minutes to snap a picture and then I've cut off heads, not centered, etc., as these pictures will testify...

While her older two sisters play she'd rather take a nap....

Sometimes it's more fun to go up the hardest way when you're two...

Swinging does not help a bad hair day...

After working up an appetite it's always fun to head to HotDog King or What-A-Burger before heading back to Nana and Papa's for afternoon nap-time or rest-time as whatever the case may be....

CHRISTENING GOWN---EMILY

Well, today I almost finished the front panel in the skirt. Did you noticed I said 'almost'. I have to add the insertion down the sides of the panel. I should be able to do that tonight. Took me three or four days to cut fabric from behind the lace. I need to do a little stitching where it's mitered at the corners. There are boo-boos!!! And it is FAR from perfect. I'd like to do it over. What bothers me the most is one of the rings is crooked and stands out like a sore thumb!

I've been seeing various blogs I follow doing a Teacup Tuesday where they post a picture of a teacup they have and tell something about it. I decided to do this too. This one is to a tea-set I inherited from my great-aunt. It belonged to my great-great-great-grandmother Sarah Wright-Guion then her oldest daughter my great-great-grandmother Sarah Mariah Guion-Weston then her oldest daughter Orvetta Weston-Billups, then to her only daughter/my g-aunt Estelle Billups-Pettit and then to me (skipping my mother) the oldest female in the next line of descent from Grandmother Sarah and so it will go to my daughter and then her oldest daughter.

The set includes a teapot, sugar, creamer, luncheon plates, desert plates, cups and saucers, berry bowls, and cake/sandwich platters. It's by Jean Pouyat , Limoges. Since I've been the keeper of it I have it in my g-aunt's corner cabinet. Part is on display in the top section. Shame on me I've never used it. But I do have fond memories of my great-aunt using it when she had teas and luncheons. I want to do a dress-up tea when my granddaughters are older and serve them tea with tradtional foods served like my g-aunt did for me and my friends.

PAMPERING AND I MUST BE ILL ! !

Today I went to take advantage of a gift certificate and got a much needed pedicure. Then I decided to splurge and get a manicure too. I'd post a picture but pedicure or not-- my bunions do not make an attractive photograph. Nor do my hands...with the liver spots/age spots, popping veins...ugh!!! Both were so relaxing, my hands and feet do look much better and I do feel pampered!!!

I also had two gift certificates for my favorite hang out Nancy's Calico Patch. Nancy's is right there in the same shopping center a few doors down. Now, I normally can't pass by there without being pulled inside by the magnetic forces and never leave without a purchase. Well, today I go in with two nice gift card/certificates in tow and and I left without a single purchase! Not a spool of thread, not a yard of fabric, not fat-quarter, not even a scrap square or fat-eighth. Not a pattern. Not a book. Not a magazine. Not a blessed thing!!!!Now I tell you girlfriend...that is a SURE sign I am ILL!!!

I did bid on a couple Scrap Therapy Patterns on EBay which arrived today! Be a while before I get to them making them... They are some which I wanted to take the class when Nancy's offered it but I had conflicts with the times they were held and couldn't attend. They'll probably be offered again in late summer or early fall and I'll take them then if I haven't found time to make them yet. Heck I'll probably take them regardless as it is MY THERAPY!!! I am also thinking about taking "Blooming Steps" again...I finished the middle section of the main part of the quilt but I am thinking I'll enlarge it....have not finished to inner nor outer borders...I'm thinking another class on it would get me the time in class to finish those sections and enlarge it to fit my bed. We'll see.

The winner of my "What Was It Giveaway" is "Happy Cottage Quilter". She was the first one to guess what "Spray Ice-Cream" that my three year old granddaughter wanted to eat was Reddi- Whip. She was eating strawberries and wanted some spray ice-cream on them.

Since Laura was eating strawberries Happy Cottage Quilter will be receiving three fat quarters of strawberry fabrics. Well, two are of strawberries and one has all sorts of berries on it including strawberries. She also will be receiving a ruler for cutting circles. Happy Quilter I hope to get it in the mail to you either this afternoon or tomorrow.

APRONS

I love aprons! Collect them, collect patterns for them, etc. I saw this link for a reversible apron which she says takes only two hours to sew up. Which means four for me. Haven't tried it out yet but plan to in the future.

A second thing...today is my birthday...washed the blinds in the garage while DH washed the windows. DD and three DGB came over and sat on porch with us. They played, watered my plants, etc. Her DH and some of the men he works with went to Richmond to the races.

DH kept the baby and she and I took the three and two year old to Nancy's Calico Patch. I bought two feet for my 180E Bernina. I also bought some strawberry related fabrics for the winner of my "Guess What It Is" Giveaway....."Spray Ice-cream". Since we were eating strawberries when she said it. "Spray Ice-Cream" by the way is the whipped cream that is in the cans that squirts out like Reddi Whip. Got some thread and a ruler to cut circles in various sizes using a tiny rotary cutter.

We went to OutBack for a late lunch early dinner. Then over to a neighbors for an engagement party for their oldest son in his forties. He has been through a LOT. He disappeared, they heard from him once or twice a year or two or three and then for years they had no idea where he was living much less if he was dead or alive. Some years back he called out of the blue after seven or ten years of not hearing a word. They sent him a ticket to come home for Thanksgiving, he pulled himself together, fought off his problems and they were major. After many years being out of a classroom he went back to college, got his bachelor's and master's in engineering. Doing great! Marrying a precious lady. I remember how hard he fought to get his life straighten out, after he had been gone for so long. After he came home got help, did wood working, an extremely talented cabinet maker, wonderful and gutting and remodeling rooms. Amazing what beautiful cabinets he made with the most simple tools. I am so happy for him and his family how he had turned his life completely around and wish he and his fiance' many years of happiness! He deserves much happiness after all he has been through and the hard work to overcome the problems.

I received this email. Most of these sayings I've heard all of my life and use them from time to time. Brought back a lot of memories growing up in the South. Still live in the South but in an area full of military. God Bless the Military. Support them fully! Appreciate their service to our country to keep us free and out of harms way. I live near two Army Bases, an Air Force Base and the worlds largest Naval Base and there are more military bases in close range. But, with such a mix of people from all over this great country of ours you just don't hear the local dialect and old sayings like I did growing up in the rural South.

I don't know who orginally wrote this. I would love to give credit to them.

Subject: Old Time Sayings with Lots of Meaning !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SOME OF YOU WILL UNDERSTAND THIS (FOR THE REST OF YOU IT WILL BE A LEARNING SITUATION) A LICK AND A PROMISE 'I'll just give this a lick and a promise,' my mother said as she quickly mopped up a spill on the floor without moving any of the furniture. 'What is that supposed to mean,' I asked as in my young mind I envisioned someone licking the floor with his or her tongue. 'It means that I'm in a hurry and I'm busy canning tomatoes so I am going to just give it a lick with the mop and promise to come back and do the job right later. 'A lick and a promise' was just one of the many old phrases that our mothers, grandmothers, and others used that they probably heard from the generations before them. With the passing of time, many old phrases become obsolete or even disappear. This is unfortunate because some of them are very appropriate and humorous. Here is a list of some of those memorable old phrases:
1. A Bone to Pick (someone who wants to discuss a disagreement)

2. An Axe to Grind (Someone who has a hidden motive. This phrase is said to have originated from Benjamin Franklin who told a story about adventitious man who asked how a grinding wheel worked. He ended up walking away with his axe sharpened free of charge)

3. One bad apple spoils the whole barrel (one corrupt person can cause all the others to go bad if you don't remove the bad one)

I'm Still Among the Living

Believe it or not I am still among the living. We had a nice long weekend trip up to Amish Country. Hit the outlet centers. Ate too much of the wonderful food up there. Only got to Zook's for fabric. They were packed with customers. Long lines at the cutting tables. So I just grabbed a few pre-cut fat-quarter rolls and some charm packs. Both were at what I thought were awesome prices! We did go to the National Christmas Museum, first time we have visited it.

I saw these Keds Sneakers and had to have them. Though the shoes are not identical in the lay out of the fabric I still had to purchase them. I could not believe they had them to fit my huge feet! They reminded me of strip quilts and also selvages making them a must have purchase for $12.99

At the National Christmas Museum there was the most awesome quilt. Here is the information about the masterpiece...

I was back in time for two Scrap Therapy Classes. The third and last meeting for "Bloomin' Steps. Which I have yet to finish!!! I really want to enlarge on it so it will fit our bed. Trying to decide if I have nerve to adjust the size. Thinking I'll enlarge on the middle section. And then the two borders accordingly. I still have one more row to do to make it the size pattern calls for it to be. I need to get a better picture put here's a close up of part of the middle section.

I have made a few of the blocks for the inner border but not sewn any of them together yet.

The other class I don't have a picture of yet but it uses sections like the outer border and I have made two of those sections for it. It's a smaller quilt, more of a wall hanging size or small throw.

Last week my beloved Laptop computer started acting strange. It apparently is very sick. Friday I took it to the son-in-law who is a computer whiz. Haven't heard anything from him yet. I am sure that isn't good news. They'll be here Easter Sunday to eat so I am hoping and praying he will have her patched up and able to save the information and programs I had on it. Most of the stuff I have backed up but not all of it. So I'm now only have my OLD desktop to connect to cyberspace and blogland and bless her heart she is like me OLD and SLOW!!!

Amish Country

Trying to get ready to take off for a few days in Amish Country to soak up the simple life and hit the outlets to help the economy. Hope to find some of the local fabric shops too. Haven't had time to work on my scrap therapy and I could sure use sewing time to unwind but no time for it now. Must get ready!

NATIONAL QUILT DAY

Hope everyone had a nice National Quilt Day yesterday! I worked on my "Bloomin' Steps" for scrap therapy. I did get three rows completed. Some boo-boos in there. But when I ripped out and tried to correct they turned out worse!!! Made a bunch of blocks from more rows. HOWEVER, not enough to finish the main/center part---AND---that has to be completed in time for tomorrow night's class at six p.m.

Baby girl had us over to eat last night. Her DH cooked some sirloin steaks on the grill that were so good, she did french fries and some green beans that were yummy. Her sewing machine bobbin tension is acting up. Dr. Al is away for a couple weeks and has two weeks of work when he gets back---so I heard when I was in the shop Friday. There is a thing cracked that we are wondering if that is the problem. It has a drop in bobbin with out a bobbin case and I've never had a machine like that so am clueless how to help her. It does seem to me the thread on the bobbin isn't tight enough...just came to me...may have her rewind it to another bobbin and see if that helps.

Need to get back at the machine and sew some more rows...and see how many more blocks I need to cutout and sew together. Have to make a Costco run today, too.

Scrap Therapy, My Giveaway

I worked on my Scrap Therapy's "Bloomin' Steps" Quilt this weekend. Made a lot of the two different small blocks, sewed some of those into blocks. Have ten or twelve blocks done. Have a stack of the small ones stacked up to sew the final step to make the complete block. Counted them to make sure I had enough to make the total required.......MERCY.......when I finish sewing these together I won't have Half of the required blocks made! Guess I'll be burning the midnight oil a few nights!

Liz of Lizards Little Luxuries who won my giveaway and lives in Australia emailed that she received the package and likes it. Can't wait to see what she creates with it!

SCRAP THERAPY---STARTING ANOTHER QUILT

Monday night I went to Scrap Therapy at Nancy's Calico Patch and we started a new quilt. It appeared to be all of the same group from the "Charming Buds" Quilt we did the last time. This time we are doing "Bloomin' Steps" We arrived with our boxes of squares in two different sizes. I took these ---

We also took strips cut from our background fabrics. We sewed the small squares to the narrow strips,

which we cut apart and sewed two of these units into small blocks.

The larger of the squares we had prepared we cut and got these---

The left over part of the squares we are saving to use in the borders at the next meeting. Here's some of mine--

We took two of each type of the small blocks and we got these larger blocks.

Our homework is to make the required amount of these blocks and have them sewn together for the center part of the quilt for the next meeting in two weeks. When we well move on to do the piping and the first border.

SATURDAY & SCRAP THERAPY

Saturday started with fried salt herring for breakfast. Then off to helping the economy with running some errands....a trip to Sam's, Wal-mart, Dunk-in Donuts, and home. DD came over with the grandbabies. They were outside blowing bubbles and drawing on the sidewalk with chalk. Next we all went to BJ's where the older two love driving the car attached to the shopping cart they have there. Stopping by What-A-Burger for lunch. Their fryer was broken so no fries or apple pies but the hamburgers/cheeseburgers were still tasty. Back home DD took the girls over to their house as it was naptime.

Papa and I were watching the USA team versus Canada in the world tournament (not sure of the correct name of the tournament) being played this year in Canada with teams from various countries around the world. Miss Daisy, one of our kitties--the one who has been so ill for over a year with kidney problems then thought she had lymphoma and all of a sudden a couple months ago rallied doctor no longer feels she has cancer and is feeling chipper as can be, she jumped up on the table and was watching the game for a good hour.

When USA won she jumped down and went on about her way.

When the girls woke up from their naps their mommy took the oldest two to the Living Museum where they saw fish, turtles and alligators and baby sissy decided to stay home and come over and play with Nana and Papa.While she and Papa were playing I started some extra cutting squares for Scrap Therapy's Blooming Steps Quilt that we are starting Monday night at Nancy's Calico Patch. I cut some of the small squares to add to my collection. This quilt requires a PILE of small squares. Over a thousand of them as I recall.

And some medium size squares..

While I was at it I cut some of the largest size squares to add to my collection of them even though this quilt doesn't call for them.

Tomorrow afternoon I need to cut the strips and squares from the background fabric.
